[From our reporter] Proverb says “one part of farm work, results in one part of harvest.” Under the leadership of the board of trustee, with the hard work of all the teachers and students, with the strong support and help from the community and the parents, KKCS ended 2009 fall semester smoothly. On Jan. 29, 2010, KKCS held its end of semester Award Ceremony in the big and bright auditorium room. All the teachers and parents got together happily to celebrate the success of the kids. The ceremony was hosted by the after school program manager, Ms. Xian, Aixin. More than 30 students were awarded for different prizes. KKCS practices holistic education, so that besides helping the students to raise their intellectual levels, and providing the students Chinese language and other types of knowledge, they emphasize more on the behavioral and moral training of the kids, and encourage kids' improvement to lead them to a holistic development. Therefore, among the awards, besides “Excellent Student Award,” there were “Best Behavior Award,” “Biggest Advancement Award,” “Helping Others Award,” “Best Disciplines Award,” “Best Homework Award,” and so on. Kids were very excited to get all kinds of awards, and the parents were proud of the advancement that their kids had made.
As a traditional Cantonese school, KKCS has made a big effort at Chinese Mandarin promotion and education. Since spring 2009, the school has designed six experimental classes, in which the “Accelerated Mandarin Class” successfully taught Cantonese speaking kids more than 1000 Chinese Characters in a year. This class is taught by Dr. Miao, Huijie, who owns a PhD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. During the ceremony, she told the parents that in the current K2 and Grade 1 class, most kids are from Cantonese speaking families, and they didn't know even one Mandarin sentence at the beginning of the semester. However now, after one semester's study, they not only can understand her Mandarin teaching in the class, but also successfully finished the curriculum tasks on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Moreover, with subjective accelerated teaching method, these kids can recognize already more than 200 Chinese characters. All the kids like her class very much. Some of them even actively ask the parents to go over and study the Chinese lessons with them at home, which made the parents really happy. Dr. Miao thinks that since the kids have some basic knowledge of Chinese now, she's confident to teach them 500 more characters during the spring 2010 semester. All the Chinese classes in KKCS are trying to adopt the accelerated teaching method, while all of them will maintain their own characteristics and try their best to help the kids to make much advancement in listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities. Mid March this year, KKCS will be the first school in MA to organize its students to attend the “Young Learner's Chinese Test”, held by Hanban, the Chinese Language Office. The weekend program already have had twice YCT supplementary classes, which were liked by the students. In the after school program and weekend program, KKCS has “YCT Experimental Classes,” helping the students to make a better foundation to pass the test.
During the Award Ceremony, the after school program manager, Ms. Xian, Aixin, introduced and emphasized on the new reform measures of the after school program in the new semester. Differed from the after school program at any other period before, KKCS is going to spend much more manpower, physical resource and financial resource, trying to become first class quality after school program in the local community. From spring 2010, all the classes at KKCS will be in charged of by experienced and knowledgeable adult teachers. In the homework help section, besides English and Math, Physics, Chemistry and Chinese will be added in, too. Math, Physics and Chemistry department will be managed by Dr. Miao, Huijie, who owns a PhD In Physics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and a BS from Fudan University at Shanghai, and has more than 10 years experience in Olympic Math Competition. To enrich the school life of the kids, and raise their ability, the after school program also established all kinds of clubs for the students, including Leadership Training Club, Arts and Origami Club, Chinese Martial Arts and Lion Dancing Club, Chinese Cooking Club, Story Telling and Children's Songs Club, and Choir and Ancient Literature Reading Club. To strengthen the relationship between the kids and their parents, KKCS will hold a “Chinese Culture Day and Parents Students and School Celebration Party” once per month, to show what the kids have achieved in the past month to their parents.
KKCS Principal, Dr. Zhou, Yanyu gave a speech during the celebration. She congratulated the kids for their achievements, and thanked the teachers and the parents for their hard work and strong support. She also taught the kids at the party to thank their teachers and parents for their teaching and raising. She's very confident about the success of KKCS' future education. The celebration party ended smoothly in happiness and joyfulness.
