Music Education

Violin Class: Starting from Fall, 2010, Kwong Kow Chinese School collaborated with the Ip Piano School (http://www.ippianoschool.com/Home.html) to teach Violin Lessen. The program will bring group instruction to KKCS students on the Saturday of every week. The goal of this course is to introduce students the basics of Western music (rhythm, notes, notation, etc.) and also introduce the basic techniques of playing the violin. This is accomplished through the use of both traditional and contemporary music, and the combination of group playing and individual practice. We find it ideal to teach in groups of 4-6 students, as it provides a good balance between individual attention from the instructor, and interaction with other students.

Future plan from the Ip Piano School: As the program develops over time, and more students reach a certain performance, we hope to enhance the communal learning experience through possible development of a chamber music program and regular masterclasses, as well as the formation of an orchestra. This will benefit the students in that it will enhance the support students have from those around them, and it will also benefit KKCS by creating a musical community in Chinatown that will help to attract and retain students.

Although it will take time, we believe the development of such a program will be of incredible benefit to all parties involved, resulting in well-rounded and informed students, and a vibrant and diverse musical community in Chinatown, of which KKCS will be the center, drawing students, parents, and other members of the Chinese community together.
